Uttarakhand Initiative – July 2013

As most of you may be aware, an unprecedented flood inundated vast areas of Uttarakhand in June 2013. Causing widespread devastation, the flood destroyed roads, bridges and communication links and wiped out entire towns and villages.

SKP reached out to ‘Space for Nurturing Creativity’ (SNC) – a school that provides a unique space for the human mind to evolve fully and holistically. Located in the North Indian state of Uttarakhand in Guptakashi, SNC espouses the belief that the task of true education is the development of a healthy holistic brain, leading to the creation of a healthy society.

The mentors at SNC consider a child’s development to be of prime importance and therefore, direct their efforts towards creating a warm atmosphere around the children. They share responsibilities in raising and mentoring children and young adults in a communal household where they conduct meditation, music sessions and group discussions. The school aims to change the collective consciousness of the world through their unique method of education.

The school’s efforts to help those affected by the floods in the nearby area of Kedarnath were a true validation of their beliefs and approach. The children and teachers left no stone unturned in helping out, without being in fear of their own lives. Furthermore, the school’s Uttarakhand Relief Initiative urged people across the country to contribute towards the affected children.

Amongst those requiring assistance were around 100 children (8–16 years old) who were orphaned by this disaster. In August 2013, SKP reached out to them with a generous donation towards the Uttarakhand Relief Initiative and over 2,000 articles of clothing and footwear. In addition, we also sent other materials such as torches, bags and tarpaulin sheets, which proved to be helpful during relief work.
