Work Culture at SKP
As I see it… Mehul Shah, HR Head, SKP group

Organisational culture is born out of and takes its cues from the Tone at the Top.

The seeds of the SKP Culture were sown in the early years of the Firm when Mr Parekh was building his  fledgling practice.

His burning desire then and to this day is to do everything in his power to fulfil and exceed his clients’ stated and unstated expectations. This ensures that he not only puts in his own best efforts but also brings to bear the expertise of other professionals in areas that he has limitations in. This in turn of course means that he remains open to new ideas and learning all the time.

He puts his faith in his people and trusts them to do their best. If they make mistakes along the way, that too is fine so long as they learn from them. This allows his people to blossom and grow into professionals in their own right.

SKP today…

Today SKP has grown into  400+ team specialising in seven service areas across five locations. Yet, at the core, the people at SKP share a common set of values viz. Excellence, Integrity, Respect for People, Teamwork and Leadership. These are born out of the seeds sown in the Firm’s early days and have evolved and developed over the years.

Our actions are guided by these values. Of course we have rules that have to  be followed but these are more to facilitate administration then a means to enforce discipline.

Our organisation structure is flat. Hierarchies and designations represent roles and responsibilities of a position rather than sources of power. This allows for openness and a free flow of ideas. We prefer to  build consensus and be transparent than choose the expediency of enforcing decisions. We are competitive but are not driven by numbers. Of course we are guided by our numbers but for us they are an outcome of what we do rather than the drivers of our actions.

Our remuneration policy and compensation structures consider both behavioural and performance criteria. Since we are not a numbers driven organisation monetary rewards do not come in the way of collaboration and sharing.

We have assiduously guarded against a ‘political culture’ creeping in and have been fortunate to have been successful. We therefore remain a meritocracy. What matters is performance and  attitude.

Interestingly, given our multi-locational, multi-practice structure and diversity of staff profiles sub cultures have developed within the overarching SKP culture.

And the challenges ahead …

In our quest for excellence and achieving consistently high service levels, we have progressively become process oriented in our delivery. We will have to maintain the balance between process compliance and the freedom to innovate and bring about discontinuous improvements.

As each of our practices grows in size and specialisation, we will have to guard against operating in silos. After all, one of our key differentiators has been our seamless cross practice service to our clients – a true Single Window Service.

And above everything, even as we continue to grow, we will always want to be a Firm that is “Big enough to deliver, small enough to care”
