Genome Valley, India’s first biotech cluster,
has been granted the certification mark (intellectual
property rights) by the United States Patent and
Trademark Office (USPTO).
The Andhra Pradesh technology development and
promotion centre (APTDC) with the support of the
state government had been working on the registration
for the project since 2003.
It was also granted a community trademark (intellectual
property rights) by the European Union in 2005.
Located near the outskirts of Hyderabad, Genome
Valley provides world-class infrastructure to
over 100 biotech companies. Spread over 600 sq
km it is being promoted as a natural cluster for
biotech research, training, collaboration and
manufacturing facilities.
The US registration will greatly enhance the credibility
of Genome Valley in the US and Europe boosting
foreign investment in the cluster. The Andhra
industries and commerce department is the authorised
user of the certification mark.
Certification marks are a form of intellectual
property (IP) right, conferred for compliance
with definite standards.
