Daimler to pump Rs. 275 cr in new plant

Luxury car manufacturer DaimlerChrysler India Ltd announced its plans to invest Rs. 275 crore over the next two years in its new facility at the MIDC’s Chakan industrial estate near Pune.

Coming up over an area of 40 hectares, the new manufacturing facility will manufacture the C Class, E Class and S Class cars for the India market.

The Company will make 5,000 cars at the plant where production is expected to begin in the early part of 2009. Wilfreid Aulbur, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for DaimlerChrysler India, also indicated that the Company may make its Actros heavy duty trucks at the plant.

Joachim Shmidt, chairman of the board, DaimlerChrysler India also revealed that the Company may consider bringing other products into the lower segments if the market is ready for it at a later date.

Currently the extent of localisation of the C class vehicles is 50 % and a little less than that for the E Class and S class. Issues related to excise duties were the main deterrents in the localization process.

Avesthagen, partner acquire stakes in two seed firms

Avesthagen and its partner Groupe Limagrain of France recently acquired majority stake in two Indian seed companies – Swaghat Seeds of Hyderabad and Cee Kay Seeds and Seedlings of Bangalore.

The move is said to be in keeping with the joint strategy of the two firms to develop technologies for farmers in India and the developing world.

While Swaghat Seeds is an integrated field crop seeds company, Cee Kay Seeds is involved in vegetable seeds.

Both the acquisitions will help facilitate Atash Seeds Private–a joint venture between Avesthagen and Groupe Limagrain– to conduct research aimed at developing novel seed varieties.

The move will also serve as a platform to launch Avesthagen’s latest technologies such as hybrid fit, drought fit and salinity fit.

Avesthagen has been involved in the convergence of food, pharma and population genetics leading to preventive personalised healthcare, since its inception. In addition to its agri-biotech product pipeline, it is also involved in the development of scientifically-validated bioactive nutraceuticals derived from Indian medicinal plants.
