Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi announced the launch of Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM), September 25 onwards.

AB-NHPM is Government of India’s transformative healthcare initiative, which intends to provide health insurance to the underprivileged sections of the Indian society. The scheme promises to provide secondary and tertiary care cover to more than 100 million economically disadvantaged and vulnerable families.

It would not be wrong to call this the most ambitious initiative taken by India since independence. While the mission promises to address the healthcare affordability at the base of the pyramid, it is essential to pay attention to scientific pricing procedures & quality of the products & services being delivered. Also, given that there is a promise from the Government that the current pricing will be revisited to make them more logical, it will be good if it is linked to a clearly articulated timeline.

Mr. Probir Das Advisor, FICCI - Medical Devices Forum

One of the ways to make Ayushman Bharat (NHPM) financially viable and sustainable is to consider contributions to NHPM by the Industry as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility under current Ministry of Corporate Affairs guidelines on CSR.

The coverage of the scheme is substantial and will be a game changer for the healthcare companies, hospitals, doctors, and other impacted sectors. This Mission will open new avenues of business for Logistics Service Providers. Those who already understand challenges and nuances of this business will be able to expand quickly to provide distribution arrangements at Tier III and IV cities.
